Deadline to enrol to vote in the Mayo by-election

Anyone living in the Mayo electorate who is not enrolled has until 8pm tonight Monday 4 August 2008 to enrol to vote in the upcoming Mayo by-election.

The AEC Divisional Returning Office for Mayo, Peter Verkerk said that any Australian citizen aged 18 years and over who is not currently enrolled must get a completed enrolment form to the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) by 8pm on 4 August 2008.

“We are urging every eligible elector who may not be enrolled, especially anyone who turned 18 after the federal election last year, to ensure they are correctly enrolled,” said Mr Verkerk.

Enrolment forms can be downloaded from the AEC website at www.aec.gov.au and are available at any Australia Post outlet or AEC office as well as at any Medicare, Centrelink, or Australian Tax Office.

“You can then take your completed enrolment form to the AEC office at   Suites 5/6, 3-5 Mt Barker Road Stirling; fax it to (08) 8131 0129; or scan and email it to MAYO@aec.gov.au,” he said.

Mr Verkerk said anyone who has recently moved address should check their enrolment is up-to-date at www.aec.gov.au or by calling 13 23 26.

“If you’re already on the roll and just need to update your details, you have until 8pm on Friday 8 August 2008to get a completed enrolment form to the AEC.”

Election day for the electorate of Mayo House of Representatives by-election is Saturday 6 September 2008.

Voting is compulsory for Australian citizens aged 18 years and over and enrolled in the electorate of Mayo.
