A total of eleven candidates have nominated to run in the by-election in the electoral division of Mayo, the Divisional Returning Officer, Mr Peter Verkerk announced today.

The candidates were officially declared at a public event held by the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) at 12 noon today.

A total of six candidates ran in the Mayo electorate at the 2007 federal election.

Mr Verkerk said that the secure printing of ballot papers would now begin and early voting would begin on Monday the 18 August 2008.

Election day for the Mayo House of Representatives by-election is Saturday 6 September 2008.  Voting is compulsory for Australian citizens aged 18 years and over and enrolled in the division of Mayo.
